The Original Digital Pet Returns for a New Generation - NYTimes.com

Making the most of a recent nostalgia trend in technology that has brought back brands like Furby and Pac-Man, Bandai is reintroducing Tamagotchi, the digital pet from the 1990s, as a lifestyle brand called Tamagotchi L.I.F.E. (for Love Is Fun Everywhere).

The original Tamagotchi was a toy that fit on a keychain; the new version is a smartphone app. An iOS version was released on Thursday, following the introduction of an Android app last month. The app is free, but comes with banner ads; an ad-free version is available for 99 cents.

The app recreates the same nurturing play that Tamagotchi offered when it was introduced in the United States 16 years ago. It eats, it sleeps and it poops. It can die, too, so you have to take care of it by feeding it, playing games with it and giving it medicine when it gets sick. To increase awareness of your parenting duties, the little guy sends alerts when it needs attention, at least a half-dozen times a day. Fortunately, Tamagotchi sleeps through the night.

The app has color graphics and better resolution than the original Tamagotchi, but it still has the same pixelated appearance of the original. If you?re feeling really nostalgic, a toy mode replicates the look of the original, including the shell that housed it. The app also includes a few extras, like a rock-paper-scissors game and the ability to share photos of your bouncing baby blob on Facebook.

The app is a simple pastime, but I can see how it could get tedious after a few days for anyone over the age of 7. The Tamagotchi?s incessant appetite is bested only by the piles of stinking poop it makes (you can tell they are stinky because they have wavy stink lines rising above them).

Unlike other mindless apps, there are no ropes to cut or fruit to slice or birds to sling at pigs. Bandai may have updated the brand for a new audience, but it forgot to advance the concept.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Samsung Galaxy S 4 mini will reportedly go on sale shortly after GS 4

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.

Update: Samsung pinged back with the following comment, which doesn't do much towards confirming or denying whether or not the GS 4 mini is indeed on the horizon. A spokesperson informed us: "We have not announced the product mentioned in the Bloomberg story."

Icycle 2 takes nude bicycling and fish-kissing to a whole new level

The folks at Chillingo were showing off Icycle 2 at GDC 2013, and it broke my brain just a little. The game mechanics themselves are very simple; the controls are ultimately the most basic ones you could have for a platformer game. The real trip is in the art style and storyline.

Players control the chilly and lovelorn Dennis, who, forwhatever reason, is chasing the woman of his dreams naked on a bicycle. Eventually, her head turns into that of a fish, but I'm not quite sure why. My demo of the game ended with Dennis mere millimeters away from smooching this aquatic goddess.Players are ranked out of three stars for each of the positively surreal levels based on how many little icicle pellets they pick up along their twisted route. Over time, players can unlock new and riduclous outfits to make sure Dennis doesn't have to do all of his chasing in the nude.

Those of you that have played Wonderputt will be familiar with the level of graphical polish and left-field thinking that the developer, Damp Gnat, is capable of. I'll go so far as to say that Icycle 2 is the most interesting and refreshing mobile game that I've seen between GDC and PAX East. The Chillingo folks are being coy about a release date, opting for a "it'll be ready when it's ready" approach, but expect it to cost about a buck in the App Store.

Huawei Verge (MetroPCS)

MetroPCS users may get a lot more cell phones?to pick from when the carrier merges with T-Mobile, but none more simple than the Huawei Verge. For just $29, the Huawei Verge is the cheapest way to get unlimited talk and text on MetroPCS for just $40 per month. Unfortunately, that's about the only thing this phone has going for it. The Verge packs a poor camera, and practically no multimedia features. It's fine for a backup line, or the occasional call, but keep looking if you want anything more than that.

Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Verge measures 4.57 by 2.06 by 0.49 inches (HWD) and weighs just 3.17 ounces. It looks and feels like a toy. The handset is made from cheap-feeling black plastic?matte on the back and shiny on the front. The 2.4-inch display features 320-by-240 pixel resolution. Like everything else about this phone, it's serviceable. Below the display are some function keys and a five-way control pad. And below those are four tiny rows of number keys that are clicky and well separated, though the backlighting is strangely uneven.

The Verge is a tri-band 2G 1xRTT (850/1700/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. The phone is 2G only, as MetroPCS lacks a 3G data network. The carrier has 4G LTE, but only some of its smartphones operate on it. Slow data aside, $40 per month gets you unlimited talk, text, and Web data. That makes the Verge a great deal, provided you live in a MetroPCS coverage area and can put up with the slow internet speeds.

Considering this phone's primary purpose is voice calling, the Verge only sounds average. Volume is loud in the phone's earpiece, though voices sound somewhat thin and hollow. On the other end, calls made with the phone sound clear enough, though background noise cancellation is poor. The speakerphone gets fairly loud, but it also begins to distort at higher volumes. Calls sounded fine through a Jawbone Era Bluetooth headset , but there's no voice dialing. Battery life was average at 7 hours and 17 minutes of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The Verge has the same simple interface we've seen on other MetroPCS feature phones. The home screen has links to the main menu, apps, and widgets. The main menu is home to all of your standard features, like call logs, contacts, messages, a music player, settings, and tools. Apps pulls up icons of all your Web-based applications on the phone's home screen, and Widgets gives you quick access to a clock, calendar, and weather info, all splashed on top of your home screen.

The Obigo 5.0 browser does a decent job with WAP sites, but it's so slow that, combined with the 2G data, browsing the Web feels more like a chore than a benefit. Considering that you're paying for data as part of your monthly plan, it would be wise to choose a phone that can surf more adeptly. Email and IM clients are included for most standard accounts, and both worked fine. All of the typical apps make an appearance as well, including an alarm clock, calculator, notepad, stopwatch, and world clock.

You get 30MB of free internal memory. There's no microSD card slot, so what you see is what you get. Fortunately, you can't do much with the Verge, so that limited storage can go a long way. There's no music or video playback, so you're limited to the few apps on the phone, the slow Web browser, and a limited selection of apps from MetroPCS to keep you entertained.

Don't get this phone for the 1.3-megapixel camera?it's not good. Photos are so blurry and undefined they look like they were taken underwater. The only way to get the images off your phone is to send them via email or picture message. It should go without saying there's no video capture, perhaps out of mercy.

If you have no use for a phone outside of making phone calls, the Huawei Verge is your least expensive option on MetroPCS. But if you want a phone that does more than the bare minimum, you'll probably have more luck with the Huawei Pinnacle 2, which is the carrier's only other feature phone right now. We haven't reviewed it yet, but it's a modest update to the Huawei Pinnacle. At the very least, it gets you a decent BlackBerry-style keyboard, along with a music player. Considering you don't have to pay for an additional data plan, it might also be worth it to look into getting a smartphone. It'll cost the same $40 per month, but will expand your capabilities dramatically. A good place to start is the LG Motion 4G, which gets you a lot of Android bang for just a little more than the price of the Verge.

Hiring Our Heroes job fair part of week-long, national hiring push

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

The math is mean. Post-9/11 veterans lug a steep?unemployment rate?that's a point-plus taller than the civilian rate. Add to that the 34,000 troops who soon will return from Afghanistan. Bottom line: The existing bulge of ex-military job seekers threatens to further swell in a world where stripes carry no sway.?

How to crack that cold equation? Just a little face time, says?unemployed veteran Ruty Rutenberg, who believes that simply standing eye-to-eye with a hiring manager allows former service members to naturally radiate the ocean of intangibles that can only be absorbed in combat.?

"That presence, that aura about military people is very tough to see online in a resume, where (HR executives) are only looking at lines of text," says Rutenberg, 29, who served as an Army medic in Iraq, riding in Black Hawk helicopters. He's been searching for his "mainstay" career for about a year. "Online, it's tough to tell a person's emotions, let alone a person's energy.

Ian Horn special for NBC News

"Online, it's tough to tell a person's emotions, let alone a person's energy," said Ruty Rutenberg, 29, who attended a job fair in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

"But when you get to be right in front of these people and interact with them, there is no trepidation for veterans in those moments. We've been in stressful situations that people can't fathom, that they've only seen in movies," Rutenberg said Tuesday at a job fair in Los Angeles sponsored by Got Your 6, an entertainment-industry-backed, national veterans campaign. NBCUniversal is a partner in that movement.?

On Wednesday, Hiring Our Heroes ??a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation?that aims to get veterans back into the work force ? is hosting a hiring fair at the?69th Regiment Armory in New York City.

Click here for a list of upcoming Hiring Our Heroes job fairs.

Both events are part of the Got Your 6 "veteran hiring week." Such events, Rutenberg believes, are critical for companies with spots to fill and veterans with bills to pay: "One of the things the military ingrains in us is how to be present and confident in the moment, really in any moment."?

Still, owning that moment may require a touch of coaching, say some career counselors, who have spotted common, repeated flaws in the resumes and in interviewing skills of ex-service members.

Humility 'can be damning'
On paper, the mistakes typically involve the use of jargon: cumbersome acronyms, technical descriptions, and ? to many civilians ? the complicated system of military ranks. Is a "specialist" special??

"They feel: 'I've earned this rank. I want to make it prominent on my resume.' But that's one of the biggest complaints we hear from employers. They don't understand what 'sergeant first class' means," says Shareem Kilkenny, co-owner of Veteran Career Counseling Services. She operates VCCS with her husband, Kester Kilkenny, an Army veteran who spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan.?

"What I have to get them to understand is: How do I translate their ranks and skills into the skills that employers are looking for? It might be better, for example, if a resume reads: 'Worked under extremely stressful conditions,' or 'Worked in a deadline-driven environment' or 'Dealt with constant change.' ?

In addition to reading like a foreign language, militaryspeak may just get a veteran's resume tossed, warns Elizabeth Hruska, assistant director of career and internship services at the University of Minnesota.?

"This can be a barrier to a civilian employer who needs to quickly understand the basics of you and your qualifications ??and (emphasize) quickly: Employers tell us they spend only 10 to 30 seconds on that initial resume once-over,"?Hruska says.?

While many veteran candidates may try to pitch themselves as the ultimate team players, some are prone to selling themselves short due to that group-first mindset, says Jason Dozier, veteran transition specialist with?Hire Heroes USA, a nonprofit dedicated to creating job opportunities to veterans and their spouses through personalized employment training.?

"Military?members are very team-oriented, and the word 'individual' can be a euphemism?for those who fail to be a productive member of that team," Dozier said. "And so tasks and?accomplishments are more likely to be framed as 'we' rather than as 'I.'?Humility is a great virtue, but it can be damning if you're looking to be?competitive in the job market." ?

Laser empties atoms from the inside out

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

An international team of plasma physicists has used one of the world's most powerful lasers to create highly unusual plasma composed of hollow atoms.

The experimental work led by scientists from the University of York, UK and the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of Russian Academy of Sciences demonstrated that it is possible to remove the two most deeply bound electrons from atoms, emptying the inner most quantum shell and leading to a distinctive plasma state.

The experiment was carried out using the petawatt laser at the Central Laser Facility at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to further understanding of fusion energy generation, which employs plasmas that are hotter than the core of the Sun.

The results are reported in the journal Physical Review Letters.

A hollow atom occurs when an electron buried in an atom is removed, usually by being hit by another electron, creating a hole while leaving all the other electrons attached. This process creates plasma, a form of ionised gas. An X-ray is released when the hole is filled.

Normally the process involves removing electrons from the outer shells of atoms first and working inwards. The team of scientists demonstrated a new mechanism for creating hollow atoms that involved emptying atoms from the inside out.

The experimental work used an intense laser, which at one petawatt delivers approximately 10,000 times the entire UK national grid, delivered in a thousand-billionth of a second, onto an area smaller than the end of a human hair.

Dr Nigel Woolsey, from the York Plasma Institute, Department of Physics, at the University of York was the Principal Investigator for the experimental work.

Dr Woolsey said: "At such extraordinary intensities electrons move at close to the speed of light and as they move they create perhaps the most intense X-rays ever observed on Earth. These X-rays empty the atoms from the inside out; a most extraordinary observation and one that suggests the physics of these interactions is likely to change, as lasers become more powerful."

Analysis and theoretical work was led by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA and Osaka University, Japan.

The analysis showed the mechanism for hollow atom generation was not due to the collision of electrons or driven by the laser photons, but was driven by the resulting radiation field from the interaction.

Lead author Dr James Colgan, from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, said: "The conditions under which the hollow atoms were produced were highly non-equilibrium and the production mechanism was quite surprising. These results indicate that a little-explored region of physics is now starting to become accessible with the unprecedented intensities reached by the world's leading laser facilities."

Co-author Dr Alexei Zhidkov, from Osaka University, said: "This experiment has demonstrated a situation where X-ray radiation dominates the atomic physics in a laser-plasma interaction; this indicates the importance of X-ray radiation generation in our physics description. Future experiments are likely to show yet more dramatic effects which will have substantial implications for diverse fields such as laboratory-based astrophysics."

If the scientific and technological challenges can be overcome, fusion offers the potential for an effectively limitless supply of safe, environmentally friendly energy. The experimental work was designed to further scientists understanding of how intense lasers can create electron beams with speeds close to the speed of light, then use these beams to heat fusion fuel to thermonuclear temperatures.

Co-author Dr Sergey Pikuz, from the Joint Institute for High Temperatures RAS, said: "The measurements, simulations, and developing physics picture are consistent with a scenario in which high-intensity laser technology can be used to generate extremely intense X-ray fields. This demonstrates the potential to study properties of matter under the impact of intense X-ray radiation."

Co-author Rachel Dance, a University of York PhD physics student, said: "This was a very dynamic experiment which led to an unexpected outcome and new physics. The hollow atom diagnostic was set to measure the hot electron beam current generated by the laser, and the results that came out of this in the end, showed us that the mechanism for hollow atom generation, was not collisional or driven by the laser photons, but by the resulting radiation field from the interaction."

Nanowire solar cells raise efficiency limit

Mar. 24, 2013 ? Scientists from the Nano-Science Center at the Niels Bohr Institut, Denmark and the Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne, Switzerland, have shown that a single nanowire can concentrate the sunlight up to 15 times of the normal sun light intensity. The results are surprising and the potential for developing a new type of highly efficient solar cells is great.

Due to some unique physical light absorption properties of nanowires, the limit of how much energy we can utilize from the sun's rays is higher than previous believed. These results demonstrate the great potential of development of nanowire-based solar cells, says PhD Peter Krogstrup on the surprising discovery that is described in the journal Nature Photonics.

The research groups have during recent years studied how to develop and improve the quality of the nanowire crystals, which is a cylindrical structure with a diameter of about 10,000 part of a human hair. The nanowires are predicted to have great potential in the development not only of solar cells, but also of future quantum computers and other electronic products.

It turns out that the nanowires naturally concentrate the sun's rays into a very small area in the crystal by up to a factor 15. Because the diameter of a nanowire crystal is smaller than the wavelength of the light coming from the sun it can cause resonances in the intensity of light in and around nanowires. Thus, the resonances can give a concentrated sunlight, where the energy is converted, which can be used to give a higher conversion effeciency of the sun's energy, says Peter Krogstrup, who with this discovery contributes to that the research in solar cell technology based on nanowires get a real boost.

New efficiency limit

The typical efficiency limit -- the so-called "Shockley-Queisser Limit" -- is a limit, which for many years has been a landmark for solar cells efficiency among researchers, but now it seems that it may be increased.

It's exciting as a researcher to move the theoretical limits, as we know. Although it does not sound like much, that the limit is moved by only a few percent, it will have a major impact on the development of solar cells, exploitation of nanowire solar rays and perhaps the extraction of energy at international level. However, it will take some years years before production of solar cells consisting of nanowires becomes a reality, says Peter Krogstrup who just completed his PhD at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

The research is conducted in collaboration with the Laboratory des Mat?riaux Semiconducteurs, Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne, the Foundation and the company SunFlake A / S. Their scientific findings work support results published in the journal Science in January. Here, a group of researchers from Lund, showed that the sun's rays was sucked into the nanowires due to the high amount of power that their solar cell produced.

Grown-up Minnie Mouse gets mature Lanvin make-over

(AP) ? Forever-young Minnie Mouse is growing up and moving on from her old red and white polka dots.

Lanvin has designed the loveable Disney rodent a new dress ? a more mature frock in royal blue and long sleeves that she can wear at special Paris events.

It was unveiled at a catwalk show in Disneyland Paris on Saturday evening.

Gone was the oversized hair bow that has been the signature of the character since she was created in 1928. In its place, the catwalk presentation showcased a smaller-sized red tiara alongside a thick, bejeweled hourglass gown with padded shoulders.

"Walt Disney was the one that actually designed Minnie. It's the first time an actual designer has come into the picture and designed a dress for her," Lanvin's designer Alber Elbaz told The Associated Press following the show.

"It was a great challenge and responsibility to do. I just wanted her to shine... I wanted to give her a crown in red, and the dress in blue, (a signature) for Lanvin."

The dress got applause from the celebrity-filled front row including actress Virginie Ledoyen and model Natalia Vodianova.

But the more mature look ? which also did away with her famed white bloomers ? didn't impress everyone.

"It's definitely more mature. It looks a bit mother of the bride," said spectator Matthew Gallagher. "I preferred the polka dots."

Traditionalists will be pleased to know that Disney says Minnie will be allowed to keep her red and white look for normal events.

Minnie has also kept her full hourglass figure. Last October, images destined for Barneys New York shop window were criticized after Minnie became a long, lean high-fashion model.

Dubbed "skinny Minnie" the short film featured the mouse-fatale in a hot-pink, ruffle covered Lanvin dress ? with longer legs, leaner arms and daintier gloved hands.

"We're not here to transform people," said Elbaz. "We love her the way she is."

Avoid These 10 Immune System Snags

Staying healthy isn't just about using hand sanitizer and avoiding coughing co-workers. It turns out some pretty surprising daily habits?like how you fight with your husband or whether you stay up late for Letterman?can impact how well your body fends off colds, flu and other pesky bugs. Here's a list of science-backed tips to add to your stay-healthy arsenal today.

Find Out If Your Immune System Needs a Boost

Don't Avoid the Water Cooler

Friendship may be Miracle-Gro for your immune system.

Research shows that the fewer human connections we have at home, at work, and in the community, the likelier we are to get sick, flood our brains with anxiety-causing chemicals, and live shorter lives than our more sociable peers. In one study, researchers who monitored 276 people between the ages of 18 and 55 found that those who had 6 or more connections were 4 times better at fighting off the viruses that cause colds than those with fewer friends.

Don't let a jam-packed workday or hectic schedule get in the way of your friendships. Stop by a co-worker's office for a quick Monday morning catch-up, or e-mail/text your friends at night to stay in touch when you're too busy for phone calls.

Don't Lose Sleep

Scrimping on sleep has a powerfully detrimental effect on immunity.

The perfect example: college students who get sick after pulling all-nighters cramming for exams. Poor sleep is associated with lower immune system function and reduced numbers of killer cells that fight germs. In fact, University of Chicago researchers found that men who had slept only 4 hours a night for 1 week produced half the amount of flu-fighting antibodies in their blood (jump-started by a flu shot) compared with those who slept 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours.

Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of uninterrupted rest every night, but how you feel in the morning and throughout the day may be a better gauge. If you're tired when you wake up in the morning, you're not getting enough?sleep, or maybe not enough quality sleep.

Is It Exhaustion or Something More?

Lenovo IdeaTab A1000F stops by the FCC

Lenovo's an old hand at this device-releasing lark, so it's no surprise to see the IdeaTab A1000-F hitting its mark at the FCC, just in time for the Q2 launch that was pencilled in back at MWC. The budget-flavored slate comes with a 1.2GHz dual-core chip, 16GB storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 LE. There's no word on pricing yet, but we imagine that even newly unemployed Julius Genachowski can afford to pick one up with his final week's salary.

Truly Ergonomic Computer Keyboard (TECK) Model 207

I tend to think about carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in much the same way that I regard mad cow disease or getting struck by lightning. Sure, I know it exists and that it's theoretically harmful but, at the same time, I've never really given much thought to it. The folks at Truly Ergonomic, on the other hand, clearly have spent a lot of time thinking about it, and it's evident in the Truly Ergonomic Computer Keyboard (TECK) Model 207 ($248 list), one of the most unique keyboards that I've ever encountered?for better or worse. The Model 207's unconventional symmetrical design lessens the risk of CTS by letting users type with their wrists as straight as possible. Despite its high-quality construction and excellent Cherry MX mechanical key switches, though, the steep price tag and overall wonky design ultimately undermine its positive aspects.

The TECK Model 207's radical design looks unlike any keyboard that I've ever seen before. Before we get to that, though, it's worth noting that the keyboard is housed in a sturdy plastic enclosure that, at 1.4 by 11.5 by 9.2 inches (HWD) with the detachable padded wrist rest attached, is roughly 60% of the size of a traditional keyboard. The reasoning behind the smaller chassis is that it reduces the need to reach out for your mouse by keeping it closer to your body. According to Truly Ergonomic, this aligns your mouse closer to your neutral position and consequently reduces stretching in a way that minimizes wrist and shoulder pain.

"Neutral position" is actually a phrase that appears a lot in the TECK Model 207's marketing materials. Its keys are laid out symmetrically so, rather than bending your hands and wrists outwards to type, they remain straight; as you may have guessed, typing with straight wrists also happens to follow the neutral position of the human body. Consequently, the TECK Model 207's keys are arranged in the standard QWERTY fashion but, because of the symmetrical layout, some keys are located in different positions compared with conventional keyboards. This is most prominent with the Enter and Backspace keys. You can find the Enter key at the center-bottom of the TECK Model 207 in between a bifurcated space bar that's been split in half in a manner similar to the dual-function spacebar seen on the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Keyboard . The Backspace key, meanwhile, is also in the center of the keyboard directly above the Enter key. The Caps Lock, Function, and Num Lock keys are clustered together in a central row. The Num Lock key turns selected keys on the right side of the keyboard to function as an embedded numeric keypad, and the front of each such key's denotes its corresponding numerical value. The Function button activates designated shortcuts when pushed in conjunction with the top row of keys, such as opening your internet browser, accessing your mail client, and media playback keys.

The keyboard is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. A Superkey located on the top-center performs differently depending on your OS. In Windows, it acts as the Windows key. It acts as the command key in Mac and as the Meta key in Linux. The keyboard connects to your system via a USB 2.0 cable.

The TECK Model 207 sports mechanical key switches like the Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate and Rosewill Mechanical Keyboard RK-9000I. Its Cherry MX mechanical keys are very durable and have a 50-million click lifecycle. At the same time, though, its keys aren't backlit, so users who prefer to work in dark quarters would be better suited with something along the lines of the Logitech Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800.

To test out the TECK Model 207, I used it for a few days in the Labs. As one can imagine, typing on it is very a strange experience. Whereas switching between keyboards is usually a seamless transition that entails a minimal learning curve, the TECK Model 207's unconventional key layout takes at least a few days to get used to. For instance, the Enter key is intended to be pressed by your thumb or index finger. The Backspace key, meanwhile, is meant to be pressed with either index finger. While the padded wrist rest helped increase my overall comfort level, the strange layout and sensation of typing with straight wrists combined to make for a bizarrely awkward typing experience.

Even with the keyboard's strange layout, its mechanical keys are a joy to type with, offering a fantastic springy feel and terrific key travel. On a tactile level, few keyboards have provided me with as many satisfying clicks as the TECK Model 207. Still, the keyboard's unorthodox layout wound up thwarting the brilliant mechanical keys, resulting in a sort of tease where users are offered wonderfully constructed keys that perversely feel out of reach.

Given its funky layout, Truly Ergonomic suggests using the Truly Ergonomic Computer Keyboard Model 207 for several days to grow accustomed to using it. After typing on it for a few days, though, I have yet to grow used to its unconventional layout. Despite being in the "neutral position" of my body for all that time, I didn't notice a difference in the way my extremities feel or in my overall comfort level. While it helps that Truly Ergonomic offers a full refund for anyone who changes their mind within 60 days of purchase, that fact remains that, at almost $250, it's priced too high in the first place. In all truthfulness, I plan on returning to my former keyboard. Sure, it's not as high-quality as the TECK Model 207, nor does it feature mechanical key switches, but at least I can actually type on it.

Political Pressure Pushes NASA Technical Reports Offline

When your political beliefs include the violent overthrow of the U.S. government, that's where the line is drawn. The 50s Communists believed exactly that. They weren't being persecuted for their political beliefs, they were being persecuted for the fact that they wanted to do the federal government what the Tea Party wants to do today. Do you agree with the Tea Party?

I don't agree with the Communists, and I don't agree with the Tea Party. I don't want to prevent either of them from being in positions in government, however. Other than by not voting for them, that is. If other people vote them in, that's their right, because I do believe in a representative government.

The line, by the way, isn't whether your political beliefs include violent overthrow of the U.S. government. It's when your actions support that. The moment you take up arms and try to force the government out and put your own government in place, I expect you to be shot down and arrested. I'm not going to support the government going after you for pre- or thought-crime, though.

Chinese solar producer Suntech declares bankruptcy

(AP Photo)

BEIJING (AP) ? Suntech, one of the world's biggest solar panel manufacturers, was forced in bankruptcy court Wednesday, becoming the latest casualty of a painful slump in the global solar industry.

Suntech Power Holdings Ltd. said eight Chinese banks asked a court to declare it insolvent after the company missed a $541 million payment to bondholders last week. Suntech said it would not oppose the petition.

The development is a dramatic reversal for a company that was a leading force in China's fast-growing renewable energy industry. Its founder, Shi Zhengrong, has seen much of his multibillion-dollar fortune evaporate.

"While we evaluate restructuring initiatives and strategic alternatives, we are committed to continuing to provide high-quality solar products to our global customer base," Suntech CEO David King said in a statement. "During this period, we will continue to work closely with all of our stakeholders and take the necessary steps to put Suntech back on track for growth."

Solar panel makers have suffered huge losses over the past year after rapidly growing production capacity outstripped demand and prices plunged. Another industry giant, Germany's Q-Cells, filed for bankruptcy last April.

Suntech, headquartered in the eastern city of Wuxi, west of Shanghai, has also been hurt by a revelation in July that a business partner faked $680 million in collateral for a loan Suntech had guaranteed.

On Monday, the company said it was looking for new financing and was negotiating with creditors in hopes of restructuring its debt.

The company had said owners of 60 percent of the bonds agreed last week not to exercise their rights under the notes until May 15. But it said the bonds' trustee declared a default, which triggered defaults on other debts owed to Chinese lenders and the International Finance Corp.

Shi, who has a Ph.D. in physics, founded Suntech in 2001. He had gone to Australia in 1988 and got into solar power by chance when he needed a job after a university fellowship ended.

Shi, who had become an Australian citizen, was lured back by officials in Wuxi who wanted to develop high-tech industry and put up $6 million to start Suntech. Shi later bought out his state backers with help from a group led by Goldman Sachs and went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005.

Shi's success made him one of China's most prominent entrepreneurs. He was named one of state television's businessmen of the year in 2006 and advised Beijing on energy policy. Forbes magazine estimated his fortune at $2.9 billion at its peak in 2008 but that had tumbled to about $500 million last year as Suntech's share price plunged.

The glut of supply in the solar panel market was brought on in large part by the Chinese government's efforts to promote the industry.

Communist leaders see renewable energy as a way to both generate higher-paying technology jobs and curb China's surging demand for imported oil and gas.

Attracted by tax breaks and subsidies, hundreds of small Chinese solar producers sprang up. New competitors were still entering the market as late as 2011, when weak demand and a supply glut forced producers to slash prices.

Other major Chinese producers including Yingli Green Energy Ltd., LDK Solar Co. and Trina Solar Ltd. have reported heavy losses. That has prompted expectations that the government will intervene and force companies to merge or shut down.

Prices of polysilicon wafers used to make solar cells plunged by 73 percent from 2010 to last year. The price of cells fell by 68 percent and that of modules by 57 percent.

Major manufacturers amassed debts of $17.5 billion, according to Maxim Group, a research firm in New York City.

Deep-pocketed Korean conglomerates are moving into the solar industry, adding still more competition.

Chinese producers also have been hit with U.S. anti-dumping tariffs imposed to offset what Washington says are improper subsidies from Beijing. European solar producers also have filed anti-dumping complaints, with the European Union asking for higher tariffs on Chinese imports.

Last week, Suntech announced the closure of its U.S. factory in Goodyear, Arizona, and the elimination of 43 jobs as a cost-cutting measure.

Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart talk politics

Top Line

Imagine, if you will, that terrorists seize control of the White House and take the president hostage--that's the plot of Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart's new action-packed film Olympus Has Fallen. Now, imagine showing that film to a theater full of Secret Service agents and politicians--that's what happened at the film's DC premiere.

Butler and Eckhart jokingly tell Top Line that they were worried they might "be stoned" at the premiere but were pleasantly surprised. "They loved it," Butler says about the audience's reaction.

In the film, Butler plays the role of a disgraced Secret Service agent who gets demoted following a tragic accident that results in the death of the first lady, played by Ashley Judd. He then finds himself in a unique position to save the day and redeem himself after terrorists take the president hostage.

"At the end of the day, we made entertainment, but it's the reality of the world that we live in with the global threat of terrorism that this is a possibility...In the beginning you could feel the, the silence among everybody because it's so real the way it's set up, but then you move through it and you come out of there with so much patriotism and you feel inspired because really at the end of the day the essence of the story, it's a hero's journey," says Butler.

With rumors swirling that co-star Ashley Judd may challenge Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for his seat, Top Line asked Butler and Eckhart to weigh in on the potential political campaign.

"I mean it just takes a lot of guts to get in the ring. So you have to give her props for that. I mean I'm, just, stand up for that. And, I think she's great. She's smart. We had a great time with her. She laughed. She flirted with you a little bit too much I thought, my wife, the first lady," says Eckhart, who plays the role of the president.

For more of the interview with Butler and Eckhart, including more on Judd's potential Senate run, check out this episode of Top Line.

ABC's Eric Wray, Alexandra Dukakis, Betsy Klein, Tom D?Annibale, and Mark Banks contributed to this episode.

N.Y. fracking foes will register as lobbyists, if necessary

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Artists Against Fracking said Monday neither the group nor Yoko Ono or Sean Lennon have been told to register as lobbyists in their campaign against gas drilling in New York, but will if necessary to continue their work.

A good-government advocate and two lobbying experts said the state should review whether Artists Against Fracking and its supporter-celebrities should be registered as lobbyists.

The group and nearly 200 entertainers connected with it aren't currently registered lobbyists, a search by The Associated Press of the database of the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics shows.

Registration would require disclosure of how much money the group has raised and how it's been spent ? a measure intended as a way for the public to know who is influencing public policy.

David Fenton, a spokesman for the group, said it would have no objection if required to register.

"Yoko and Sean, as true with many New Yorkers, have expressed concerns about fracking, participated in the submission of comments to the Department of Environmental Conservation, and visited Albany with their own resources," Fenton said. "As such, neither Yoko, Sean, nor their Artists Against Fracking endeavor have been required to be registered lobbyists. If there is a need to register, of course, that will occur."

Over the years, several celebrities or their groups have been required to register as lobbyists. But whether celebrities must register hinges on its specific circumstances. The line between lobbying and free speech isn't bright or clear.

Under state law, a lobbyist is defined as any person or organization "employed, retained" in "any attempt to influence the passage or defeat of any legislation ... or approval or disapproval of any legislation by the governor." That can include nonprofit groups and their unpaid advocates.

The activists, among them actors Mark Ruffalo and Susan Sarandon, are trying to protect the environment from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The group says forcing water and chemicals deep into shale deposits to extract gas threatens drinking water and the environment.

The group's website implores, "Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't Frack New York."

"You spend money lobbying, you have to register," said David Grandeau, former executive director of the state lobbying commission and now an attorney representing lobbyists and clients. On Monday, after an AP article appeared on the group, he added: "It's clearly lobbying" and said the commission "missed the boat."

A good-government advocate said the lobbying regulator, the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, should look into the case.

"When someone is trying to influence or change public opinion, there's always a concern if the public doesn't know exactly how much money they are spending to do that," said Barbara Bartoletti, of the League of Women Voters. "I don't know if they are splitting hairs between educating the public or lobbying."

The commission can't confirm or deny it will take on any case, spokesman John Milgrim said.

Ravi Batra, a former member of the commission board, called it an important issue.

"When celebrities get involved in influencing public opinion, it behooves everyone to make sure the law is followed to the letter," he said.

There's no public record of how much money Artists Against Fracking has spent, but its website contains links for visitors to make donations, which are directed to the Sustainable Markets Foundation. Although the foundation is an established charitable organization and its donations are recorded publicly, it isn't registered with New York as a lobbying client, either.

Under New York law, however, it appears Artists Against Fracking is required to be a registered lobbyist because the law hinges on spending over $5,000. The group hasn't filed lobbying reports, so the amount it has spent and what it was spent on isn't known publicly. Experts in Albany say the website and public events appear to have cost well over $5,000.

The widow and son of musician John Lennon recently attended an anti-fracking event in Albany with Ruffalo, actors Zooey Deschanel, Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman, and singer Lady Gaga, along with other longtime activists such as David Crosby and Paul McCartney.

A week ago, Artists Against Fracking widely released a music video done through Skype from various locations featuring dozens of entertainers singing a Sean Lennon song, "Don't Frack My Mother." In it, Ono sings part of the chorus, "Don't frack me!"

Failing to register as a lobbyist is not a criminal offense. Commonly, when a person new to lobbying is believed to have failed to lobby as required by law that person is given a chance to submit a lobbing form and pay a $200 fee.

One of the main players supporting fracking, the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York, is registered.

Lobbying is big business in New York. The New York Public Interest Research Group reported that more than $220 million was spent lobbying in 2011 ? and that was before the fracking debate really heated up.

The biggest penalty for failure to follow the lobbying law resulted in a $250,000 fine against Donald Trump and others over casinos in 2000, and the Philip Morris tobacco company was hit with a $75,000 fine in 1999.
