'Black Monday' could happen again, expert says

The stock market crash of 1987, the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 508 points. NBC's Tom Brokaw and Mike Jensen report.

By Holly Ellyatt, CNBC Assistant News Editor

Twenty-five years after ?Black Monday? ? when the U.S. stock market went into a free fall and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 22.6 percent in a single trading session ? one?market expert believes we could still see a repeat of the worst one-day plunge in history.

?In one sense, it could happen again,? David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the S&P 500 committee at Standard and Poor?s, told CNBC on Friday. ?We could get to a point where everybody decided that the world was incredibly?over-valued and the only thing to do was to sell,? he said.

He added: ?We do have?circuit-breakers and in theory they would work very well, but the?humna psychology?that was around in 1987 is still around today and that is that everybody can suddenly change their mind and the result can be a massive crash.?

Blitzer noted that in 1987, when trading predominantly happened on the floor of a particular exchange, human fallibility was a threat ? and it still is.

?We weren?t safe from the human element then and I don?t think we?re safe from it now,? he said.

Although global stock markets and trading have become highly technical and computerized over the last 25 years, the absence of the human element has not meant that glitches have become rare.

Indeed, high-frequency trading, which uses software to post trades in microseconds, has been blamed for a number of high-profile glitches on global stock markets over recent months, the most infamous example being the so-called?"flash crash" of May 2010 when the Dow industrials plunged 9 percent and recovered minutes later.

?The vulnerability is different now," Blitzer said. "We had the 'flash crash' where everything went down and came back up again. So things can happen much more quickly than they used to. ? I think the danger is still there.?

He added: ?What we?ve really learned in the last five years is that just about anything can happen again. We didn?t expect a recession like the Great Recession, we didn?t expect to see a financial crisis, but we got them.?

Small Business Marketing Gangnam Style!

If you like this post, please say thanks by sharing it!

Small Business Marketing Gangnam Style!

Unless you have been living in a hole or or you have head your head buried in the sand for a few weeks, it?s been pretty impossible to miss the phenomenon that is the Korean music ?star? PSY?s Gangnam Style hit song!

Please don?t ask me what it is or what it means but if you haven?t seen it, I?ve added his video to the bottom of this post? please don?t get too excited or embarrass yourself by attempting to do the dance in the office? ?believe me, they never let you forget it? errr? ok, well maybe that was just me!

gangnam style small business marketing

Small Business marketing Gangnam Style

In case you haven?t seen it, the Korean music star pops some hilarious dance moves while wearing his trademark sunglasses, tuxedo and loafers and has enjoyed global fame since his video?s release. In fact check these stats?

As of October 17, 2012, the music video has been viewed over 480 million times on YouTube and is the site?s 7th most watched video!

This goes to show how much websites like YouTube are an integral part of our daily lives and just how they can explode with videos going viral across the globe. Justin Bieber shot to stardom through it. So did PSY, who was previously only popular in his home country of Korea.

If you think how big Gangnam style is thanks to youtube, surely this shows how vital video marketing is on probably a much smaller scale, to small business owners and marketers.

When it comes to marketing, using video and sites like YouTube gives everyone a level playing field to compete on, whether you are a sole trader or a multi-national business. ?Videos help you build not only stronger relationships but they help you do it significantly quicker too!

It can be used to build much stronger relationships with your clients and prospects if you are prepared to stand in front of a camera and talk? not something everybody is comfortable with I know, but if you can do it, you definitely make a bigger impact and grow your reputation.

Of course there are other ways you can get your message out there with video. You can create powerpoint presentations and then play them and speak over the presentation, just using a cheap microphone like this one from Amazon. ?Use a free screen service like Screenr and you are away and making videos!

Create your own Youtube channel and upload your videos!?Of course you need to get metaphorical ?bums on seats? so you need to tell people you?ve made a video and uploaded it to youtube?

Here?s a quick tip? Youtube, like Google likes to show videos that are popular and the more popular they are and the speed in which they get views is vitally important. So, when you are ready to upload a video, make sure you have a strategy in place that you can immediately roll out to get views. So do this?.

  1. Make your video and have it ready to upload to Youtube
  2. Write an email and a blogpost explaining the content of your video and what people can learn from it and have it ready to send out
  3. Upload your video, add the youtube link to your email campaign and immediately send the email to your database.
  4. Then instantly share the video on all your other social media channels like facebook and twitter
  5. Add the video to your blog and publish it

If you do all these things at once and you get views quickly, youtube will see it?s popular and push it up the rankings, resulting in even more views!

Here are a few pointers for a successful video marketing campaign:

1. Like everything in your marketing, what is of upmost importance is the quality of your content! Try and make your videos and the ideas you include to be catchy, unique and interesting. Encourage people to share and give people something interesting to talk about with their friends.

2. Ensure you are consistent in the messages and the core values to present. This is all part of your brand and reputation that will help you build a community and a following.

3. To make sure you connect with the viewers of your videos, make them personal, honest and ensure you maintain integrity? talk about what you know about in a personal way that communicates your personality. Be genuine as people will see straight through you if you pretend to be something you are not! They should feel that your videos add value and really help them and definitely don?t just sell! Of course you can add calles to action in appropriate place but if you make it all about selling you will turn people off!

4. Like all social media, interract with people who comment. Always try and reply and converse with people and obviously a good way of getting ideas for future videos is to ask people to add questions that you can respond to with more videos.

So ultimately, if you are not using video marketing as part of your small business marketing strategy, then just give it a go!

See how easy it is to be a success? if PSY can do it with Gangnam Style, then so can YOU!

Check his video out below to see what all the fuss is about? and as always, leave your comments at the foot of this post!

Corporate Partner Spotlight: Charles Schwab | Daniels NetWorth

Charles Schwab & Co, Inc. is a Daniels Corporate Partner, and has long supported Daniels students through collaborative projects, sponsorship of the Daniels Inclusive Excellence Case Competition and in other ways.

In spring 2012, Charles Schwab had a project that needed creative thinking and a fresh perspective and turned to the Daniels Consulting Firm (DCF), the consulting arm of the Daniels Strategy and Consulting Group. DCF is a student-run organization that strives to prepare its members for success in the business consulting industry.

?We value the insights that the Daniels Consulting team brought to one of our recent marketing projects,? said JP Snow, VP, client experience, who was part of the Charles Schwab team that worked with DCF. ?They were able to quickly understand the key issue. Then they delivered exactly what you expect from a consulting engagement: outside perspective that is still relevant and practical. We?re using their product as we develop the next steps in our business plan.?

Jessica Gu (MBA 2012), past president of DCF?who worked on the project and was recently hired by Charles Schwab?says that the DCF-Schwab project dramatically enhanced students? skill sets and understanding of the business world. ?Throughout a 10-week project, we worked closely with our client to help them solve the business problem they faced,? Gu said. ?We increased our business acumen and are better prepared for career-growth opportunities. I really appreciate Charles Schwab, DCF and the Daniels College of Business for giving me this great opportunity.?

?Working with Schwab was a fabulous test of the skills we acquired in the Daniels MBA program,? said Emalee Sugano (MBA 2012, BA 2010), the DCF project manager for the Charles Schwab project. ?The client was wonderful, gave helpful feedback along the way and was open to our final recommendations. This was one of the biggest projects DCF has tackled thus far, and we hope for continued challenges like this in the future.?

Iran lawmaker accuses IAEA of passing nuclear secrets to Israel

DUBAI (Reuters) - A senior Iranian lawmaker accused the head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog on Sunday of passing confidential information about Iran's nuclear activities to Israel.

In the latest sign of strained relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Javad Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament's presiding board, said IAEA chief Yukiya Amano would be to blame if Iran reduced its ties with the body.

"Amano's repeated trips to Tel Aviv and asking the Israeli officials' views about Iran's nuclear activities indicates that Iran's nuclear information has been disclosed to the Zionist regime (Israel) and other enemies of the Islamic Republic," Jahangirzadeh was quoted as saying by Iran's English-language Press TV.

"If the agency's actions lead to Iran cutting cooperation with this international body, all responsibility will be with the IAEA director general," said Jahangirzadeh, a member of parliament's national security and foreign policy committee.

The IAEA was not immediately available to comment on his allegation.

Last week, Iranian nuclear energy chief Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani said "terrorists" might have infiltrated the Vienna-based agency. He suggested the IAEA included too much sensitive information about Iran's nuclear program in its reports that he said could be used by saboteurs.

Western diplomats dismissed his allegations as an attempt to distract attention away from the agency's bid to gain access to a site in Iran it suspects was used for nuclear weapons research, something Tehran denies.

Iran blames Israel and its Western allies for the assassination of nuclear scientists in Iran, including an unsuccessful attempt on Abbasi-Davani in November 2010. It also blames those countries for computer viruses that appeared designed to damage its nuclear machinery.

The 35-nation board of the agency censured Iran earlier this month for defying international demands to curb uranium enrichment and failing to address mounting disquiet about its suspected research into atomic bombs.

The resolution prompted Iran's Parliament Speaker, Ali Larijani, to cast doubt on the benefit of Iran's membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the Tehran Times reported.

The commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, told a news conference last week that Tehran would withdraw from the NPT if attacked by Israel which has increased hints it may launch air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites.

Iran's parliament does not decide matters of foreign policy and national security, which are the province of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
