Volunteering in your spare time isn't just a good way to help the community, it's a great and free way to learn the skills you need to make a career change or get promoted in your current job.
The blog Free Money Finance points out that if you don't have the cash or the time to go to school, but can spare a few hours after work or on weekends, or if you're a student looking to learn something new outside of the classroom, volunteering with a local charity doing something you've always wanted to learn is a good step. In many cases you can take advantage of someone willing to mentor you, or you can learn at your own pace and help a charitable organization at the same time. Plus, it's not hard to find volunteering gigs you'll enjoy doing.
Plus, those non-profits may not have the budget to hire professionals, so you have the opportunity to not just learn a new skill, but really shine, do something great, and take those experiences and accomplishments to find a job in the field you want. It's a great resume booster, and while you're volunteering, you may do some of that networking we always say is essential to finding the best jobs.
